The water of the hot springs is nice but I will caution about being cavalier in your entry approach. Some jagged rocks gashed my heal badly so I didn't spend long as I was bleeding. I actually thought the primitive tub just up the path is more enjoyable, though it is hotter and a bit smaller.
Most notable at the Hot Springs Campground is the Hart Mountain Hot Springs (also known as Antelope Hot Springs). This is a natural hot springs that is open year round. The hot springs is located in the middle of the campground, at the head of Rock Creek, and is surrounded by an aspen-dotted meadow. This natural rock pool is 6 by 9 feet, and 5 feet deep, made of bedrock, and can accommodate up to 6 people. The water is a very comfortable 100-104 degrees F and bubbles up from the pool’s gravel and bedrock bottom. A small ladder at one end of the pool provides convenience in getting in and out of the warm water. The Hart Mountain Hot Springs is well defined by the castle-like stone and concrete wall around the spring. This nicely constructed feature makes the hot springs very relaxing, can add privacy, and adds a bit of style and flair to this otherwise natural and rugged landscape.
The camp host Patricia is a lovely woman and told us this was rare and usually it's no problem to find a site. She actually apologized there wasn't a better site available... I told her we were just on a night's layover so don't be sorry about it. Lol
The Hot Springs Campground is very primitive but will accommodate tent camping and small to medium sized motor homes. No water or other services are provided. The Hot Springs Campground has 30 camping sites. The camping spots are first-come first-serve, unmarked, and at no cost. The land at the campground is nestled nicely between rolling hills, and is fairly plush with aspen groves amidst a more barren prairie-like surrounding landscape. There can be remarkable setting sunlight on top of the surrounding mountain peaks in prime Spring and Summer months.
This place is way out there but a sunset or sunrise drive in was so worth it. The camping grounds are spacious and spaced out. The hot springs were fantastic on cold mornings and starry nights. Remember pack it in pack it out!
My only advice is don't go during any hunting season, and carefully use the ladder when entering the hot tub. Otherwise it is an amazing spot for adventurous folk.
These springs are definitely a little out of the way, but totally worth it! There are 2 spots, 1 developed area and one that is just a hole in the ground. The undevloped one is kind of muddy but it is also a lot warmer. Very much worth it.
A lovely spot for primitive camping. There is room for small RVs but no hookups for water or electricity. The only amenity available at site are pit toilets, but they are nice as outhouses go...
The area is fascinating from a geological perspective because there are many springs- both hot and cold- in the center of the camp. The vistas are great and if you know how to look you can find some sunstones. The campground is not far from the public collection area and majority of the Sunstone mines so if you are a rock hound this is a good place to camp.
We inadvertently visited during antelope season so it was filled with hunters and there was only one spot available when we arrived. We considered ourselves lucky because it is a long drive on a gravel road to get to the hot springs campground. It's a free site so we weren't about to complain, but I really didn't want to drive back if it was full.
